Today’s Mix Tape

I’ve had mix tapes on my mind recently after reading jason’s reviews and finding some of my long lost compilations. urban outfitters has the perfect solution for old school mix enthusiasts in the modern world. the mix tape flash drive let’s you share digitally, but keep to the cassette aesthetic.

In the Mix: Digging up some old cassettes

ever since jason started his “in the mix” posts, which revive old cassette compilations, i’ve been meaning to dig deep and find one of my own. he’s pulled from his high school years, during the height of our 7″ craze and even a post-college post rock-ish mix. this weekend i was cleaning out some closets and came across a box that had one of my favorite compilations i put created. it’s definitely from my indie rock days and about half the songs come from 7″s. like most of the mixes i made, it didn’t stick completely with one genre of music and has some ebbs and flows. anyway, without further ado here’s my contribution to “in the mix.”

Bowie on Bowie

despite many years in the music business, David Bowie continues to surprise and impress fans. last Sunday he included a free 12-song cd of his favorite songs through the years in the Daily Mail paper. it’s quite a varied compilation spanning his career. the article includes his stories about the songs, how they came about, and why they are still meaningful to him. i particularly enjoyed reading about one of my favorite tracks from Hunky Dory, the Bewlay Brothers:

Unlike the rest of the Hunky Dory album, which I had written before the studio had been booked, this song was an unwritten piece that I felt had to be recorded instantaneously.

I had a whole wad of words that I had been writing all day. I had felt distanced and unsteady all evening, something settling in my mind. It’s possible that I may have smoked something in my Bewlay pipe. I distinctly remember a sense of emotional invasion.

I do believe that we finished the whole thing on that one night. It’s likely that I ended up drinking at the Sombrero in Kensington High Street or possibly Wardour Street’s crumbling La Chasse. Cool.

A Year in the Life of Philip Glass

the director of Shine spent a year following Philip Glass and made a movie about the experience. the movie, Glass: Philip in 12 Parts, appears to have been released last week but isn’t playing anywhere near me.

I made a Muxtape

No, that’s not a typo. I found a new service that allows you to (legally) share a mixtape with others. You can upload up to 12 songs (mp3 only) that are no larger than 10MB to your account and the songs play through the browser. No niceties like pause, ff or rewind, but definitely a cool idea in its infancy. Without further ado, here’s my Muxtape.

Journey’s New Singer

holy crap, this guy is amazing. i read a while back that Journey found a new lead singer on YouTube and was planning on playing some concerts. it turns out they guy they found, Arnel Pineda, used to front a Journey cover band and posted a bunch of their performances. let me be more specific, a cover band in the Philippines! they flew him over and gave him a job. I forgot about the story until I saw this stereogum post with video from their first show together. very impressive.

Top Kids’ CDs of the Year

WXPN has saved me from having to do a blind taste test on all the kids’ music that is out there. they’ve compiled their favorite discs of 2007 and have a nice player so you can listen as well. so far i’m really digging Candy Band and the Poopsmith Song.

Keeping Up With the Scene

since i’m homebound most of the time, it’s tougher to keep up with which concerts are coming to town. thankfully, some good people developed iConcertCal, a plugin for iTunes. based on bands in my music library, it shows a calendar listing which ones are coming in concert.

Sir Richard Bishop Plays Sun City Girls

i recently stumbled across the sir richard bishop play sun city girls 7″ online, and was pleased to hear jason had already snagged one of the limited copies. the record has three acoustic variations on some wonderful songs, which gives them even more life. i found the video below of sir richard bishop playing esoterica of abyssinia in this same fashion. astounding.

Today Is

i remember back in 1993 when Siamese Dream came out and Today became one of the most overplayed alt-rock songs ever. it was a great song, it was just impossible to escape. now 14 years later the Pumpkins are reuniting and some present day musicians are showing them some love. Ben Kweller does a terrific job with a stripped down version of the song.
